Worried about breaking your bank on your trip to paradise? No fear, Tropical Helicopters has a few tips on all the FREE things to do in Hawaii! Here are Free Things To Do In Hawaii: The Top 5.
Observe Turtles at Laniakea Beach
North Shore’s Lanikea Beach, or Turtle Beach, is famous for its green sea turtles stretching out on the warm sand. The turtles often emerge from the water and come up on the beach, which makes for easy viewing and great photos. Volunteers are usually on site to share facts about the turtles, and rope off sections of beach to protect them. It’s important to keep in mind that due to the popularity of the attraction, the area usually gets crowded. The beach is on the smaller side and features rocky cliffs the turtles climb to munch seaweed.
Explore Hawaii State Art Museum
Another great option is the Hawaii State Art Museum, which features an extensive collection from a diverse array of artists celebrating Hawaiian culture and history. Opened in 2002, the museum is home to paintings, photos, prints, mixed-media, and sculptures. The museum is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10AM-4PM and is free to the public. The museum is an excellent way to immerse yourself in the thriving Hawaiian art community.
View a Film at Courtyard Cinema
Courtyard Cinema offers a free movie screening at the Ward Village Courtyard in downtown Honolulu on the second Thursday of every month. The Courtyard Cinema showcases several Hawaii International Film Festival curated films, and usually runs from 6PM-9PM. The movie schedule is posted online, and you’ll need to reserve free tickets to attend. If they run out of tickets, you can get on the standby list and would be allowed in after regular ticket holders.
Take a Stroll Around North Shore
Oahu’s North Shore is famous for its intense surfing competitions. In the winter, waves there can be thirty feet high. Running for more than seven miles, the beaches along the North Shore are a fantastic place to go to relax, get a tan, and surf (for the pros). North Shore is also home to Haleiwa Town, perfect for shopping, snacking, and sipping on some delicious (and famous) shaved ice.
Watch Kuhio Beach Torch Lighting and Hula Show
Every Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday, you can experience authentic music and hula shows at Kuhio Beach Hula mound across from the Hyatt Regency Waikiki. The ceremony opens with the traditional blowing of a conch shell and torch lighting. The event takes place outside, and offers seating on the grass. This is a wonderful way to experience a slice of Hawaiian culture without spending big bucks.
